Sup Gang!

Since August is National Hair Loss Month, we felt that we should make the last blog post of August about hair loss and how you can grow your hair with protective styles.
Sis, Hair Loss impacts millions of men and women every day! Nearly 85% of men will have significantly thinning hair by age 50, and about 40% of women will experience hair loss or thinning by age 40.

So What Causes Hair Loss?

To be honest it’s very normal to lose 50-100 hairs a day as part of the hair growth cycle. So don’t panic after detangling, but bald patches or thinning may be an indicator of a hair loss condition.
The most common cause of hair loss is genetics. However, other reasons for hair loss can include:
Hormonal changes
Intense stress
Autoimmune diseases
Medical treatments
Prescription drugs
Poor diet
Harsh styling practices
While only a medical professional can determine the exact cause of hair loss, the most common reason men and women lose their hair is genetics. So how can we protect our hair?
Protective styling is a term every natural hair woman, or pretty much every woman hears on the daily. It’s said that protective styling is the way to go when focusing on healthy hair growth. But what exactly qualifies a hairstyle as protective?
A true protective hairstyle is at its base simply a style that protects the ends of your hair, helping to decrease tangling, shedding, and breakage. A protective hairstyle hides your ends from exposure but should leave them in a detangled state.

How Do I Grow My Hair with Protective Styles?

First of all make sure the protective hairstyles you are trying aren’t just for a HOT SELFIE on the #GRAM, make sure they actually PROTECT your mane. Please pleaseeeeee make sure you don't go too tight, too small, or too heavy on protective styling.
No matter what your curl pattern is the number one thing to remember before tucking away all your curls/coils is to make sure they are well-moisturized!
DON’T FORGET to make sure your hair is clean, deep-conditioned and moisturized prior to installing, to ensure your hair can actually go the DISTANCE without damage.
Sometimes it doesn’t have to be that complicated hairstyle Sis, you can keep it SIMPLE = SAFE.
REMEMBER the less you do to black hair, the better it flourishes. Protective styles offer the low-maintenance that so often benefits this hair type, especially if a longer length is one of your aims!
