YOUR GUIDE TO APPLYING AND CARING FOR YOUR BOHO LOCS

Either you’ve just received your locs or you’re clicking refresh on the tracking page and counting the hours til you’re looking fierce! Either way, you’re in the right place. This page has everything you need to apply and take care of your locs properly!

It is absolutely critical that you read this til the very end. For reals. Your beautiful mane will thank you. Here we go!

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HAIR BEFORE YOU INSTALL YOUR BOHO LOCS

Keeping your hair moisturised under your extensions is essential!

Healthy hair is moisturised hair so we must ensure that the hair underneath is getting as much moisture as it can!

Prior to installing your extensions we recommend that you use the L.O.C method on your natural hair.

L.O.C stands for Liquid, Oil, Cream.

So after washing and deep conditioning your hair we recommend using first a water based moisturiser (with water listed as the first ingredient) then following that with a natural oil of your choice (Olive, coconut, jojoba etc) and then following that up with a cream based leave in or natural hair butter.

Doing this before you apply your locs serves as a great foundation for keeping your hair moisturised throughout your install.

Are you a visual learner, like me? Need some additional guidance? Watch the video below where I go through this step by step:

HOW TO DO YOUR CORNROWS FOR YOUR BASE FOR YOUR LOCS

Here’s another video for your viewing pleasure, to make sure you get it all right the first time.

DAILY MAINTENANCE FOR YOUR NATURAL HAIR UNDER YOUR LOCS

WHAT TO DO ON THE DAILY

Daily moisture is important while your locs are in. Daily moisture is great for the hair and scalp and will keep your hair healthy.

We recommend moisturising everyday with a natural water based moisturizer, because that way you can use it on your natural hair roots and scalp safely.

We recommend making your own mix containing: 2/3 distilled water, 1/3 Aloe Vera juice

* You can also add a squeeze of your favorite natural leave-in conditioner to make the mix extra moisturizing and fabulous (totally optional).

Mix this together in a spray bottle, and mist all over your scalp and roots. You will likely have put these locs in using the crochet method with a corn-row base so feel free to spray as much of the corn-rows as you can with this mixture!

If you don't want to make a mix you can also use your favourite moisturiser or water based leave in spray to do the job!

Do this daily or every other day, you don’t want the hair to feel wet after doing this, but you do want it to feel slightly damp.

You can then follow up with a natural oil on your scalp (recommended) and you can also use a natural oil in the ends of the extensions to add sheen if so required.

Feeling a little lost? Never fear! I’ve also put this all in a video which you can see below! I was wearing individuals extensions in this video but the logic still applies to the crochet locs.

CHECK OUT OUR VIDEO BELOW ON HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR LOCS!!!

WASHING

It's not necessary to wash your locs. How awesome is that?!

However if you absolutely feel you need to, then we recommend that you wash your extensions a maximum of once every two weeks to avoid product build up. But be careful with this, regular washing will affect the quality and longevity.

Not gonna lie, I do moisturize my natural hair on the daily but I don't actually wash my locs at all while they are installed. But for those of you who want to wash them, here’s how you make it happen.

To wash (For MERMAID LOCS please also see the additional notes)

1) We recommend getting a nozzle top applicator bottle to wash the hair with. In the bottle you mix lukewarm water and a small squeeze of shampoo, and then shake the bottle to mix the shampoo and water.

2) Then go through your hair and apply the shampoo mix directly to your scalp and rub in gently to remove any debris.

3) We then recommend heading under the shower to rinse the shampoo out on a cool setting. You don’t want the water to be hot because this may change the curl and wave pattern that is in the hair.

4) Then you want to blot and towel dry the hair.

5) Then you can apply a little bit of leave in to the length and oil to the ends of the extensions for sheen and let them air dry.

NOTE: The wave pattern in the hair will decrease slightly when the hair is washed, to maintain the wave we recommend putting the hair in 3 – 4 large plaits and allow it to air dry.

Additional notes for MERMAID LOCS

Mermaid locs are made with a combination of locs and wavy hair and they do act differently than just locs.

Again we don't recommend washing the locs, but if you do want to wash them I recommend following the above but washing the hair in 4 loose plaits. This will help the wavy hair from matting too much.

Also be sure to use a super cool/cold water temperature when washing!

DO NOT towel dry this hair roughly or in circular motions as you will cause the wavy hair to matt. Blot it dry keeping it smooth and allow it to air dry naturally.

NIGHT TIME

BOHO GODDESS - Put the hair in a loose pony hair or loose high bun to sleep.

MERMAID LOCS - Put the hair in a very loose braided ponytail with a cotton band at the end or a loose ponytail with a silk scarf. (Mermaid loc after care video below)

Silk pillow cases are everythaaaang! Invest in one if you haven’t got one already.

GENERAL TIPS and FAQs

> It is normal with synthetic extensions to experience some matting, tangling and shedding as wear increases and after the extensions have been washed.

> It is normal for synthetic hair to sometimes appear dry, to minimize this please follow our daily moisturizing tip and follow with a natural oil or oil sheen spray of your choice.

> The wave pattern in the hair is not completely permanent. You may find after some wear that the curls drop slightly and after washing they drop more. To maintain the curl we recommend firstly not washing the hair, but if you do then be sure to let the hair to dry in 3 – 4 plaits after washing and avoiding washing the hair in hot water, luke warm is fine, but hot should be avoided.

> This hair can last 8 – 12 weeks. It’s not recommended to re-use the hair but if at the time of removal you notice that its still in a good condition then go ahead and re-use it! Most clients do reuse some of their locs!

> We don’t recommend that you colour the extensions!

HOW TO APPLY YOUR BOHO BUTTERFLY LOCS

HOW TO APPLY YOUR BOHO GODDESS LOCS!!!

NOTE! I recommend doing 8 cornrows as the base for this style and I recommend only doing individual crochet in the front hairline and not the parting. Video update coming soon!!!!

If you choose to do individual crochet in the front of your locs then we HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you do the double wrapping technique (vid below) to ensure the locs stay in place!

HOW TO APPLY BOHO BOB LOCS

One of the newest additions to our crochet loc collection!!!! Below is how you apply your boho BOB locs!!!

I had so much filming this one....spot and all!!

HOW TO DOUBLE WRAP YOUR LOCS

All you need to do this are:

A few spare locs or some marley hair in the same colour as your locs

> Nail glue

> Scissors and your crochet needle

You can see how to do it below. But any questions then please feel free to email me at any time.

IMPORTANT NOTE!!!! Make sure when applying the glue that you do is PAST your natural hair!

HOW TO DO THE PULL THROUGH METHOD

This method is an alternative if you do not wish to double wrap your hair, all you need is:

An extra small crochet needle

You can see how to do it below. But any questions then please feel free to email me at any time.

HOW TO LAYER YOUR LOCS

So some of you may have noticed I've been all about layering my locs lately. I love the way it frames my face.

If you want to layer your locs then you can check out this in depth tutorial video below.

HOW TO INSTALL YOUR LAYERS

This year we introduced Layers in our most popular styles, Bronde (and all of our styles that include Bronde), Midnight and Chocolate.

Check out this tutorial video below where I install our new Bronde layers.

HOW TO STRETCH YOUR LOCS

Another thing I have been doing to my locs of late is stretching them out... I do LOVE the curl of how the locs come, but I also like the stretched out look....

I've got it in my head that stretched out, the locs look more like 'beach' hair, even though I live in London and we have no beaches here!

The BOHO STRETCH elongates your locs, adds weight and movement to the hair and makes the hair more wavy and less curly

HOW TO APPLY YOUR MERMAID LOCS

!!IMPORTANT NOTE WHEN INSTALLING MERMAID LOCS!!

If you don’t read anything else on this page READ THIS!!!

In each pack of BOHO LOCS we provide you with more than enough hair for an install and this is true of mermaid locs also.

You will find either 20 or 40 strands of our Mermaid wave hair in your kit however we DO NOT recommend that you install all of the wavy hair, as it is, by design too much hair.

We recommend using a max of 15 strands of the wavy hair in your install.

We recommend that you install 10 - 12 of these in the hairline with your individual extensions and then an additional 3 - 5 in the top and in your parting. We DON’T recommend that you use them in the back or nape of your head.

Then if you want to at a later stage you can swap out the Mermaid Waves for fresh ones, because you will have plenty of mermaid waves left.

NOTES:

I recommend doing 8 cornrows as the base for the extensions!

I RECOMMEND THAT YOU DOULE WRAP THE INDIVIDUALS IN THE HAIRLINE TO KEEP YOUR HAIR INSIDE THE LOCS. Please see the video higher up on the page for how to do this in detail.

For the spacing when apply the mermaid locs and waves I normally do them about 1" apart at the back, but when I reach the crown I will do them about 1cm - 1.5cm apart!

ALSO - I didn't use a full kit in this video. I used around 70 extensions and only about 1/3 of the wavy hair pack. So I would recommend that you only use more if you want a fuller look!!!

THIS SH*T WORKS, FAM, Because no one has time for tangles.

Here are the steps you need to follow to maintain your locs:

1- When installing use a MAX of 20 wavy strands per install and LESS if this is your first time!

2 - Install the wavy strands towards the top of your hair, in your parting and hairline. Don’t install any at the back!

3 - When the are installed follow this process to keep them looking fresh!

  • Wet each mermaid strand thoroughly.
  • Then coat each strand with a dime size amount of any cheap hair conditioner, anything with silicones is great!
  • The follow that up with a dime size amount of any strong hold gel.
  • Work that into the hair and let the hair dry and VIOLA! You will have soft, carefree and tangle free mermaid locs!

Be sure to do this in the morning to allow the hair to dry throughout the day. Don’t do this right before you go to bed!
