If you've ever wondered what an entrepreneurs world and journey looks like then you're in luck because we're spilling all the tea on boss life with our CEO, Lulu.
To mark Lulus birthday and in the spirit of International Women's Day [8th March] *cancels all plans for self-care*, the team decided it was the perfect time to reflect and ask our Boho Tribe Founder some grilling questions to find out more into the brains behind the fire locs.
Q: If you could invite 3 people over for a dinner party who would it be and why? (dead or alive)
Lulu: The first person would be Aldous Huxley. His book, Brave New World is my favourite book, so I would love to understand his mind and where he was coming from in the time he wrote it.
Secondly, P. Diddy who is my favourite entrepreneur, I love the fact he created a whole new world like bad boys and that was my time of coming up.
Last but not least, Michael Jackson. He's the king of branding. He did branding like no other artist has ever done before. There are so many tokens that you just think ‘yep, that’s MJ', and he was the catalyst of everything behind the brand, alongside his music, he’s just a genius.
Q: If you could describe yourself in one word what would it be?
Lulu: Simple, by this I mean I'm happy with the simple things in life. As long as my house is clean, there's food in my fridge, and my business is growing. I'm happy! If any area in my life is not where I want it to be, I simply transform it to where I'd like it to be. I try not to complicate things in the process.
Q: Outside of Boho Locs what is your greatest achievement?
Lulu: My daughter. She is doing amazing. She speaks and reads Chinese very well. She’s the top of the class and that makes me so proud!
Q: What was the ‘light bulb’ moment that made you think your business idea could really be a success?
Lulu: When I started to get fully booked at home, like 3 months in advance doing the crochet locs, as I had a way of doing it that looked very different. This was a sign that I could make something really successful.
Q: Did you experience any adversity or doubt from others or yourself, and if so how did you handle it?
Lulu: I did of course. On this journey you do doubt everything you do, that's just the nature of being an entrepreneur. Even though you may present this persona of being confident and knowing exactly what you're doing, the real catalyst behind a business question, you have a questioning mind so that never goes away. I handle it by just turning doubt into a challenge, and watch myself rise to that challenge.
Q: What habits/mindset helps you be successful?
Lulu: Feel the fear and do it anyway is a mantra that I LIVE by! Something may seem scary but you just have to go with it, you can’t let fear be the thing that stops you. Instead, say ‘I’m afraid but I'm going to do it anyway.
Q: What are some mistakes you’ve learnt from creating your own business?
Lulu: I did not build a team sooner enough, I thought I could do things on my own and nearly went mad because of it.
(The team, doing what we do. We all mad now.)
Q: What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs?
Lulu: I would say go with your gut, be bold and brave.
Q: What does the future look like for Boho Locs?
Lulu: The biggest hair brand in the world! If Beyonce was a product, we'd be it. The excitement Bey generates when she drops albums and tours is the same energy that Boho Locs wants to encapsulate.
Fundamentally we just want to aim to represent Black women authentically from all walks of life, countries, skin shades, sizes, and ages! We will be the brand to speak too and understand Black women, and deliver products that they are proud to wear.
Yes ma'am! We hope this inspired you to go after your dreams big or small and trust the process. Who knows what is waiting for you on the other side of fear.
Issa fact that women of colour are starting businesses at a remarkable 4.5 times the rate of all businesses, and as of 2019 Black women account for 50% off all women-owned businesses.
(BussinessWire.com, 2019) Amen.
On that note, do something today your future boss self will thank you for. We're rooting for you!
Comment any questions you would like answered by our CEO!
