Ethos Behind the Own Your Sh*t Campaign
Check out our previous blog post, to learn all about the human hair collection: Introducing Our New Boho Seamless Human Hair Collection
The phrase "Own Your Sh*t" isn't just a catchy slogan; it's a declaration. It’s a powerful affirmation of self-acceptance, resilience, and the unwavering spirit of Black women. It’s a call to embrace our beauty, our power, and our unique stories. And it's the driving force behind our new Boho Seamless Human Hair Collection.
This collection is more than just hair; it's a tribute to the legacy of Black hair innovation. For centuries, Black women have faced immense challenges in the beauty industry, often excluded and overlooked. Yet, despite these obstacles, they persevered, creating their own products, building their own businesses, and defining their own standards of beauty. Their stories are a testament to resilience, ingenuity, and a refusal to be silenced.
We've talked about the incomparable Madame C.J. Walker before, a pioneer who revolutionized hair care for Black women. But her story isn't an isolated incident. It's part of a rich tapestry of Black entrepreneurship and innovation. Let's delve into the stories of a few more incredible founders whose legacies continue to inspire us, spanning generations:

Annie Malone: A contemporary of Madame C.J. Walker, Annie Malone was a self-made millionaire and a pioneer in the hair care industry. She developed her own line of hair care products specifically for Black women and established Poro College in St. Louis, a training and educational institution that empowered countless Black women. Malone’s focus on education and entrepreneurship not only provided economic opportunities but also fostered a sense of community and self-reliance. She understood that hair care was more than just aesthetics; it was a form of self-expression and empowerment.

Christina Jenkins: While not as widely known as Walker or Malone, Christina Jenkins' contribution to the hair industry is undeniable. She invented the hair weaving technique, a revolutionary method that allowed for longer, fuller hairstyles. This innovation not only transformed the way Black women styled their hair but also created new avenues for entrepreneurship within the beauty industry. Jenkins' invention was a testament to the power of creativity and ingenuity in addressing the specific needs and desires of Black women.

Taliah Waajid: Taliah Waajid is a contemporary natural hair care pioneer. Recognizing the need for products catering specifically to the diverse textures and needs of natural Black hair, Waajid developed her own line of products and has been a prominent voice and educator in the natural hair movement for decades. She is also the creator of the annual World Natural Hair, Health & Beauty Show, a major event celebrating natural hair and providing a platform for Black-owned businesses. Waajid's work has not only provided women with access to quality products but has also fostered a strong sense of community and self-acceptance within the natural hair movement. She exemplifies the power of entrepreneurship combined with advocacy and community building to transform the beauty landscape.
These women, across generations, faced systemic racism, limited access to capital, and societal pressures that sought to diminish their contributions. Yet, they persevered. They saw a need, they created solutions, and they built empires. Their stories are a reminder that resilience, innovation, and a deep understanding of the needs of their community can overcome even the most daunting obstacles
