Welcome to the Boho Locs journey. This isn’t just a story about hair, it’s a story of determination, innovation, and a whole lot of love. My name is Lulu, and I’m the founder of Boho Locs. I didn’t create this brand because I dreamed of starting a business – I created it because I needed a solution.
If you’ve ever struggled with hair breakage, protective styles that didn’t slay, or crochet locs that didn’t cut it, you’re not alone. I’ve been there. And Boho Locs was born out of my desire to solve these very problems – not just for me, but for you, too.
Let me take you back to where it all began.
The Brazilian Blowout Nightmare
A few years ago, I was rocking my natural hair, mostly in twist-outs. They were time-consuming to style but when they turned out right? Fabulous. Still, like many of us, I craved simplicity. Enter the Brazilian Blowout – the treatment that promised smoother, easier to manage hair.
The first treatment was everything I hoped for – bouncy curls, easy styling, and a polished look. But the second treatment? Disaster. It stripped the life out of my curls, flattened my volume and left my hair in a state I barely recognized.
My once glorious afro had flatlined. My hair felt lifeless and brittle and no amount of twist-outs could bring it back. I was devastated.
The Search for Protective Styles
After that fiasco, I turned to protective styles as a way to heal and regrow my hair. I tried it all: sew-ins, clip-ins, braids. They worked for a while but didn’t feel like me. Then I discovered faux locs.
There was something about locs – their natural look, the boldness of the style – that just resonated with me. Determined to get the perfect look, I decided to create my own individual faux locs. It took me three entire days to complete, but the results were stunning.
The downside? The time it took. There was no way I could commit to making this my go-to style. I needed something quicker, easier but just as fabulous.
The Crochet Loc Struggle
That’s when I discovered crochet locs. They seemed like the perfect solution – fast and easy to install. But as I searched the market, I realized no brand offered what I was looking for.
Some were too shiny, others too heavy. Some didn’t move naturally, and others didn’t have the right texture. Coming from a family where my mom and sisters all wear locs, I knew I couldn’t settle for anything less than perfection.
So, I decided to create my own. Starting with a base loc I liked, I customized it until it felt just right. Natural, lightweight, and stunningly beautiful.
BOHO LOCS® Is Born
At first, these locs were just for me. But when I shared them on Instagram, the response was overwhelming. People loved the look and asked where they could get them. That’s when I realized I had something special.
I decided to hold my first sale, handcrafting each loc myself with the help of my mom. Every order was unique and the locs sold out in just three days.
From there, things took off. I began holding monthly sales, each one selling out faster than the last. Our Instagram community grew and videos of our locs went viral – one even reaching over 2 million views!
But what truly moved me were the selfies from customers around the world, proudly rocking their Boho Locs. Seeing women everywhere feel confident and beautiful in their locs was the most rewarding part of the journey.
